Community Science Campaigns

Community science is a through-line across my research. It connects vegetation-climate mismatch, urban ecology, and biodiversity data legibility. This page documents some of the campaigns I have an active role in.
Zombie Forest Bio-blitzes
I lead a campaign to identify and monitor indicator species in zombie forests. We have run two bio-blitzes in Empire Mine State Historic Park near Grass Valley, CA, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. We document understory species in ponderosa pine forests experiencing vegetation-climate mismatch (iNaturalist project pages for 2024, 2025).
California Fire Followers
Statewide iNaturalist campaign documenting post-fire biodiversity after the 2020 fire season, led by the California Native Plant Society. I built a data explorer tool for them. Here’s the iNaturalist project page
City Nature Challenge
Global campaign founded and co-led by the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. I’ve supported some of the back-end data analysis. Here’s the (City Nature Challenge webpage)
Bay Area Urban Species Searches
Targeted search events across the Bay Area to fill iNaturalist observation gaps for conservation-priority species, run with TOGETHER Bay Area and YES Nature to Neighborhoods. This campaign provided data for the SDMs in the Connecting Urban Biodiversity project.
